FEATURED QUESTION

Do brand-name medications work better than generic medications?

No. Brand-name medications are not more effective at treating conditions than generic medications. Both types of medications have the same active ingredients which ensures they work the same way to treat your illness or condition. This means both have the same side effects too. Brand-name medications may look different than their generic version. But regardless, it will be just as effective. The biggest differences between brand name and generic medications are:

  1. Cost. Brand-name medications tend to be more expensive because they are the originating drug. The manufacturing money is spent on research, making the medication, and advertising. Generic medications are the same as the brand name and are released after the brand name’s patent expires. Generic medications cost manufacturers much less because they aren’t the original drug and aren’t advertised.
  2. Different inactive ingredients. Inactive ingredients don’t affect the medication’s treatment benefits. Inactive ingredients can make the brand and generics appear different or have different colors and fillers.
