Colds and sinus infections. What’s the difference?
A cold and a sinus infection can feel similar with some of their shared symptoms like a stuffy nose and coughing. But they aren’t the same.
Colds are caused by a virus that lasts no more than 10 days. These typically don’t require prescribed medication.
Sinus infections happen when your sinuses are inflamed from a virus, bacteria, or allergies. These usually last longer than colds and may need medication to treat them.
Common medications used to treat sinus infections include:
- Decongestants
- Nasal saline rinses
- Antibiotics
Cold medication helps provide symptom relief. While sinus infection medication reduces inflammation and treats the infection.
