Why do I have to take some medications under the tongue?
Some medications are taken under the tongue to help them work faster.
When you swallow a pill, it has to pass through your digestive system before it starts working. This can take time.
Taking medication under the tongue skips that step by dissolving it and quickly enters your bloodstream. This method is commonly used for fast relief, like chest pain or nausea/vomiting.
Only take a medication under your tongue if your doctor or pharmacist tells you to. Not all medications should be taken this way. Medications meant to be taken this way are specifically made to dissolve.
